Three Benefits Of Ginseng

There are certain roots, plants and remedies that have been used for centuries as part of traditional herbal medication but at the same time have proven health benefits that see them used in modern medicine as well.

Of these, ginseng is one of the most well known, because its effects have been widely studied and corroborated. This is highlighted in the meaning of ginseng’s name, “human root”, which has highlighted its importance to the human body since 196AD.

There are three types of ginseng based on when it has been harvested. Fresh ginseng is harvested within four years, white ginseng within six years and red ginseng at any point after that.

Here are three proven health benefits of ginseng.

Antioxidant

A potent liver antioxidantresearch into ginseng has highlighted its ability to reduce oxidative stress and inhibit inflammation.

Red ginseng, in particular, has been found in both test-tube and human tests to improve antioxidant activity and reduce oxidative stress markers.

This in turn prevents the production of free radicals and the reactions they cause that can damage cells.

Improved Mental Performance

Panax ginseng has been explored for its soothing effect on the brain, which helps to calm the mind down, improve mental performance and decrease mental fatigue.

study looking at its use found that taking a daily dose of Panax ginseng can help calm people down and improve their mental arithmetic abilities.

Immune System Boost

Ginseng affects the immune system and helps to keep people disease-free. A study on people recovering from surgery found that people who took ginseng daily could reduce their chances of disease for five years by up to 35 per cent.

As well as this, there has been at least one study that suggests that ginseng could boost the effect of vaccines as well.
